Pepper – a warm up drill between two players. The players pass, set, and hit back and forth to each other in that order. This is a common warm up drill before a game or practice.
Free Ball – an easy ball that is returned over the net by a forearm or underhand pass. This ball is called free because it’s a free opportunity to get a good pass, set, and attack against the opponent.
A team can touch the ball three times on its side of the net. The usual pattern is a dig (an underarm pass made with the forearms), a set (an overhead pass made with the hands), and a spike (the overhead attacking shot). A block is not counted as one of the three touches.
